US-funded jet flew Flávio Bolsonaro to Florida
The private jet used by Flávio Bolsonaro to flee Brazil for the United States was paid for from a US bank account via an intermediary, the airline's owner told AFP on Thursday. The conservative senator arrived in Florida on Wednesday with his family. The flight was chartered by Jason Miller, a Donald Trump advisor, according to US media reports. Argentine airline Baires Fly owner Luis Grande said he received $150,000 from the intermediary's US company account, though he did not know the client's identity. Flávio Bolsonaro, who denies electoral fraud claims, entered Argentina overland before departing from Puerto Iguazu. The affair strains relations between Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won the October 25 election. Trump called the vote "a shame" while the White House has not commented on the flight's funding. Flávio Bolsonaro, whose passports were cancelled amid a money laundering investigation, has vowed to lead opposition from exile.
