France imposes curfews in Paris and other cities after nationwide riots
France has imposed overnight curfews in parts of central Paris and other cities following a weekend of riots and looting across the country, with police admitting they "lost control" in some areas. The curfew in Paris applies to Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping area from 23:00 to 06:00 local time, with partial curfews announced in Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon, and Lille. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, whose resignation was rejected by President Emmanuel Macron, acknowledged police failings, while over 2,500 people have been arrested and about 1,000 officers injured. The protests began last month over school conditions but expanded to include fuel prices, cost of living, and public services, drawing 550,000 demonstrators. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has given mayors curfew powers, pledged recovery funding, and warned of a possible state of emergency, while damage is estimated at hundreds of millions of euros.
