Trump's comments came amid a stalemate in US-Iran hostilities, following the collapse of a June framework agreement over disagreements on implementation and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict began in late February after a US-Israeli attack on Iran, which retaliated against targets in Israel and US bases. The remarks followed Washington's announcement of an "Economic D-Day" with the "toughest sanctions in history" and a naval blockade. However, experts question the campaign's success without action against China, which buys roughly 90 per cent of Iran's oil exports.
