China has vowed to defend its "legitimate rights and interests" against US threats of secondary sanctions on countries trading with Iran, signaling firmness while avoiding escalation ahead of a planned Xi Jinping-Donald Trump meeting. The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman made the statement Tuesday, while state newspaper China Daily criticized Washington's "illusory" belief it can force Beijing to cut economic ties with Tehran. The US has imposed new sanctions on 60 entities, including Chinese and Hong Kong firms allegedly supporting Iran's military and oil revenues. Washington is targeting Chinese banks facilitating Iranian oil purchases and companies providing dual-use technology like drones. China's response comes as Trump has promised an economic "D Day" against Iran, with the two leaders expected to meet within a month.
