UAE official says Iran conflict enters new phase of economic pressure

The US announced new sanctions against Iran on Monday, which a senior UAE official says moves the conflict into a new phase of escalating economic pressure. Dr Anwar Gargash, adviser to the UAE President, said the new phase will mark an end to attempts to seize control of the Strait of Hormuz. He added that Iran's aggression against Arab Gulf states was a misguided strategic choice that increased its isolation. The US sanctions target five areas including digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the measures as part of plans for the "economic asphyxiation" of Iran, warning of consequences for countries that decline to join the pressure campaign.
