An oil tanker was struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of Oman, damaging its engine room and leaving it inoperable, the British maritime agency UKMTO reported late Monday. The incident occurred 9 nautical miles northeast of the Omani town of Ash Shishah in the Strait of Hormuz. The crew was reported safe, though the tanker's nationality and direction of travel were not disclosed. Ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz have been regularly targeted since the Israeli-American offensive against Iran began on February 28. Iran, which claims control of the strategic waterway, was threatened with "economic asphyxiation" Monday by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who unveiled new sanctions.
