Iran and Oman discuss temporary shipping lane through Strait of Hormuz

Iran and Oman discussed establishing a temporary joint navigation corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and mine-clearing efforts, following talks in Tehran on Tuesday. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed a phased framework for the waterway, which normally carries about one-fifth of global oil and LNG exports. The two countries agreed to continue technical negotiations on a permanent corridor, with a joint statement saying the framework includes information exchange and navigation services. The talks follow a June US-Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war, which began after the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, leading to a blockade and counter-blockade. The proposed temporary corridor and mine-clearing project come as US President Donald Trump claimed all mines have been removed from international waters, while Iran insists the strait will not fully reopen until Washington meets demands, including lifting sanctions and unfreezing assets.
