China Warns of Response as US Sanctions on Iran May Hit Chinese Firms

US Treasury Secretary Bessent announced multiple economic sanctions against Iran, warning of countermeasures against nations not participating. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on the 25th that China is closely monitoring developments and will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. Lin Jian reiterated that China firmly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions lacking international law basis and UN Security Council authorization, stating that economic warfare and maximum pressure only escalate conflicts and disrupt global economic and financial order. He emphasized the urgent need to cool down the situation and return to dialogue and negotiation tracks. Bessent's "Operation Economic Outcast" aims to cut off all economic lifelines supporting Iran's regime, with no country exempt from US sanctions. When asked about Chinese banks doing business with Iran, Bessent indicated they would become sanction targets if involved in Iranian commercial transactions.
