Treasury chief to unveil new Iran sanctions as Trump pressures Tehran
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will announce new sanctions targeting Iran's economy on Monday, describing the measures as an "economic D-Day" designed to sever all financial lifelines to Tehran. The expanded sanctions regime will include stronger secondary penalties on entities and countries that transact with Iran, according to Bessent. The action comes as the Trump administration seeks to pressure Iran amid a six-month conflict, following failed negotiations and ongoing military operations. Bessent wrote in the Financial Times that the offensive aims to leave Iran isolated. The Treasury has already taken eight sanction actions since January, including designating Shahr Bank and two Dubai-based exchange houses for allegedly laundering oil revenue.
