Iran and Oman discuss temporary Strait of Hormuz corridor

Iran and Oman held talks in Tehran on Tuesday to discuss a phased framework for managing ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, including a joint temporary navigational corridor and mine-clearing project. The waterway has been effectively closed since the war in Iran began in February. The foreign ministers' joint statement said further negotiations will establish a permanent corridor and future administration of the strait, along with mechanisms for information-sharing and traffic management. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the temporary inbound route would pass entirely through Iranian waters, while the outbound route would use both Iranian and Omani waters, with further talks planned over 30 to 60 days. The talks come a week after US President Donald Trump threatened strikes against Oman if it interfered with Washington-Tehran negotiations over the strait, as June's US-Iran memorandum of understanding expired. Iran also discussed the strait with a Pakistani delegation in Tehran on Tuesday.
