Iranian Speaker Mocks US Treasury Chief Over 'Economic D-Day' Sanctions

Iran's parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf mocked US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over Washington's new sanctions campaign, which Bessent dubbed "Economic D-Day." Ghalibaf criticized the apparent contradiction in Bessent's statements on X. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also condemned the sanctions, warning they extend beyond Iran and force global institutions to choose between obeying Washington or facing consequences. The remarks followed Bessent's Monday announcement of "Operation Economic Outcast" targeting Tehran's financial networks. Bessent said the campaign aims to sever Iran's economic lifelines, with expanded sanctions covering digital assets, technology, and shipping. US President Donald Trump separately claimed Iran faces a humanitarian crisis, without providing evidence.
