Iran and Oman agree on temporary Hormuz shipping corridor

Iran and Oman have agreed on a temporary shipping corridor in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced Tuesday, though he stressed the waterway remains closed until the US meets commitments under a lapsed June peace deal. The 7-mile-wide transit route will begin and end in Iranian territorial waters, but precise coordinates, operational protocols, tolls, and vessel restrictions remain unclear. The agreement follows weeks of talks between Tehran and Muscat, with Oman's foreign minister saying technical discussions will develop a long-term arrangement. The strait has been effectively closed since February 28 US-Israel strikes on Iran, disrupting one-fifth of global oil and LNG shipments and spiking Brent crude prices above $100. Gharibabadi urged countries to resist US sanctions pressure, while President Trump has threatened to bomb Oman over the deal.
