US sanctions Iran in 'economic D-Day' warning to other nations
The US government announced an expansion of sanctions against Iran, aiming to isolate the country from the global economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called it an "economic D-Day" and a final warning to other nations. The Treasury imposed measures on five sectors, including cryptocurrency, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping, and sanctioned nearly 60 companies, individuals, and vessels. Bessent threatened to exclude any institution facilitating Iranian money laundering from the US dollar system. The move follows nearly six months of US-Israel conflict with Iran, with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz largely blocked. Washington is also targeting Chinese purchases of Iranian oil, while President Trump's approval rating stands at 33 percent.
