US announces new sanctions to isolate Iran's economy and warns all nations
The United States announced new measures Monday to isolate Iran's economy globally, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent detailing the plan and warning all countries of consequences for continued engagement with Tehran. Bessent's "Operation Economic Marginalization" targets Iran's financial networks, aiming to cut all revenue streams supporting the regime. The Treasury will sanction over 60 entities, vessels, and individuals linked to Iran's nuclear and missile programs, while enforcing a "zero-leak" policy. Iran warned that any escalation "will undoubtedly have consequences," with officials threatening to treat countries supporting sanctions as committing "an act of war." Tehran has also intensified pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, listing 45 ships it claims violated its rules and threatening confiscation.
