China and Iran: Beijing Defies US Sanctions, Keeps Trade Flowing

China said Tuesday it will defend its interests and maintain economic cooperation with Iran despite new US sanctions, rejecting interference in bilateral trade. Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said China-Iran cooperation operates within international law and should not face disruption, adding Beijing will take all necessary measures to safeguard its rights. China is a major buyer of Iranian oil. The US sanctioned about 60 Iranian-linked entities and vessels Monday, threatening countries doing business with Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington has a timeline for nations to cease activities or face unilateral action. Iran warned neighboring countries of consequences for joining the US pressure campaign.
