Kyiv’s water outages persist as generators fall short

ua.korrespondent.net (Ukrainian) —

Kyiv is experiencing recurring water supply disruptions following one of Russia's largest attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with outages reported across all districts on November 5. Authorities have stabilized the power situation but acknowledge significant water service problems. Generators cannot fully power the water system because pumping equipment requires up to 1.4 megawatts, exceeding diesel generator capacity. The government is providing 10 additional generators, but experts say gas-piston or gas-turbine units are needed for large facilities. Prolonged power outages lasting 8-10 hours could cause complete dewatering of high-rise zones, requiring at least three hours of stable electricity to restart the system. Experts say the network itself won't be permanently damaged, though voltage fluctuations pose risks to pumps.
