US Says India's Shift From Russian Energy Is Difficult
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump wants a 60-day period to analyze the impact of sanctions on Russia and tariffs on other countries, acknowledging it is "hard" for India to move away from Russian energy. Rubio noted the sanctions include tariffs on countries like India, and the waiver period will allow study of effects on the global and US economy. He said India has diversified its energy portfolio but still receives substantial Russian energy due to difficulty pivoting quickly, while remaining an important US ally. Trump waived sanctions under the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which empowered tariffs up to 100 percent on goods from major Russian oil buyers including India and China. Russian oil now accounts for about 35 percent of India's monthly imports, up from under 2 percent before the Ukraine war.
