Flávio Bolsonaro Demands Annulment of Brazil's Presidential Election
Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro is challenging the runoff election result, demanding its annulment over a two-hour extension of voting hours, a move he calls unacceptable despite his own camp having requested a similar extension. The Supreme Electoral Court declared incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva the winner with 51.74 percent of votes against Bolsonaro's 48.26 percent. The extension, granted nationwide until 7 p.m., followed Lula's campaign request citing public transport issues, though Bolsonaro's campaign had sought extensions only in specific states due to floods and power outages. Judge Cristiano Zanin, a former Lula lawyer, approved the extension, which Bolsonaro claims violated electoral rules and fairness between states. Lula, aged 80, secured a fourth democratic term, becoming Brazil's first president elected four times.
