Lula narrowly defeats Bolsonaro in Brazil's presidential runoff

spiegel.de (German) —

Brazil's electoral court confirmed that 80-year-old incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the presidential runoff against right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, securing a narrow victory in the country's largest election. The runoff pitted Lula, of the left-wing Workers' Party, against Senator Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party, with polls showing them nearly tied. Bolsonaro had led the first round with 47 percent of valid votes to Lula's 45 percent, among roughly 159 million eligible voters. On election day, a judge extended voting hours nationwide by two hours due to reported transport issues, and heavy rains caused disruptions in some states. A dispute over bus stickers in Salvador also led to the arrest of a city official.
