Lula asks Brazil's top court to extend voting after bus disruptions

vg.no (Swedish) —

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has asked the Supreme Court to extend the election process, claiming many voters were prevented from casting ballots after buses were taken out of service in São Paulo and other cities. Speaking Sunday less than two hours before polls were scheduled to close, Lula accused mayors of using "dirty tactics" to block voting. The head of Brazil's top electoral court confirmed reports of bus problems in Bahia state but did not confirm whether polling hours would be extended. In Bahia, a judge issued an arrest warrant for the transport secretary of Salvador, where at least 75 buses were blocked from leaving municipal garages on election day. Salvador's mayor, allied with opposition candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, alleged unions posted illegal campaign material for Lula's party on vehicles. International observers earlier described the vote as peaceful and open.
