Lula wins fourth term in Brazil as Bolsonaro challenges election result

lesoir.be (French) —

Brazilian left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was re-elected Sunday, securing an unprecedented fourth term, but conservative rival Flavio Bolsonaro announced plans to annul the election. Lula won with 51.8% of the vote against 48.2% for Bolsonaro, a margin of 4.4 million votes. The 81-year-old had trailed in the first round against the son of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of an attempted coup. Bolsonaro refused to recognize the results, citing a Supreme Court decision to extend voting by two hours after Lula's team alleged voters were blocked by bus removals. His father also contested his 2022 defeat and is serving house arrest.
