Lula to Appoint at Least 4 More Supreme Court Justices by 2030
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will appoint at least four more Supreme Court justices by 2030, following his reelection, potentially reaching 13 total nominations during his tenure. The appointments include filling the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso's retirement and successors for Luiz Fux (April 2028), Cármen Lúcia (April 2029), and Gilmar Mendes (December 2030), who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 75. An agreement with Senate President Davi Alcolumbre delays the first nomination until after the election's second round. With these picks, Lula would have appointed 70% of the Court by his fourth term's end, matching his 2010 record of seven nominees. Separately, Court President Edson Fachin aims to expedite a police report citing six justices in financial dealings linked to banker Daniel Vorcaro.
