Lula defeats Bolsonaro in Brazil's presidential runoff

t-online.de (German) —

Brazil's presidential runoff election has been decided, with incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva winning by a narrow margin over right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. With nearly all votes counted, the 80-year-old Lula secured 51.75 percent against Bolsonaro's 48.25 percent, according to the Supreme Electoral Court. Around 159 million Brazilians were eligible to vote in Latin America's largest country, with polls showing the race extremely close. Bolsonaro had led the first round with 47 percent to Lula's 45 percent. Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin extended voting hours nationwide by two hours due to public transit problems, and a dispute over buses in Salvador led to the arrest of a city official.
