Lula's Re-election: No Transition Team, but New Term Requires Inauguration
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was re-elected on Sunday, and his government will not undergo a formal transition process as required for changes in the presidency. The law exempts re-elected presidents from forming a transition team, allowing Lula to continue using existing government structures. Lula will still need a new inauguration ceremony for his fourth term on January 5, 2027, as set by Constitutional Amendment 111. Until then, he may adjust his cabinet, revise priorities, and prepare measures, with potential changes influenced by the new Congress elected in October. The re-election does not automatically remove current ministers, and Lula can keep or replace them at his discretion. The government will operate normally until the mandate ends, with the inauguration marking the start of a term scheduled to conclude in January 2031.
