Lula wins unprecedented fourth term as Brazil's president

bluewin.ch (French) —

Brazilian leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was re-elected Sunday, securing an unprecedented fourth term at nearly 81 years old to lead Latin America's largest country. With 51.76% of votes against 48.24% for conservative senator Flavio Bolsonaro after a near-complete count, Lula defied predictions. He had trailed the son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) after the first round. Brazil thus avoided a rightward shift seen in Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, all backed by US President Donald Trump. It remains one of Latin America's few progressive strongholds.
