Lula da Silva wins fourth term as Brazil's president
Brazil's incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won a second-round election, securing a new term with 51.79% of the vote against Senator Flavio Bolsonaro's 48.21%, according to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Lula received 64,256,232 votes versus 59,826,041 for his Liberal Party opponent, with turnout at approximately 80.8% of over 158 million eligible voters. High turnout reportedly aided Lula, who became the first candidate in Brazil's democratic history to win after placing second in the first round on October 4. Lula, previously president from 2003-2010 and re-elected in 2022, has condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine while maintaining Brazil's neutrality and advocating negotiations. The campaign also involved Flavio Bolsonaro's promise to pardon his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest for a coup attempt.
