Lula wins Brazil election, defeating Bolsonaro's son
Brazil's left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won the presidential runoff against right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro, securing another term with 51.75 percent of the vote to 48.25 percent, according to the Supreme Electoral Court. The 80-year-old Lula's victory blocks the Bolsonaro camp's attempt to shift Latin America's largest economy rightward and align more closely with US President Donald Trump. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest, has not publicly commented on the result. Lula, who previously governed from 2003 to 2010, faces a difficult fourth term with a strengthened right-wing opposition in Congress. He will need to build coalitions with centrist parties while addressing public discontent over living costs and high state debt.
