Brazil's Presidential Runoff Polls Close After Two-Hour Extension

srf.ch (German) —

Brazil's polling stations have closed for the presidential runoff after voting was extended by two hours nationwide. Around 159 million Brazilians voted to decide between leftist incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. The race is extremely tight, with polls showing the candidates nearly tied. Bolsonaro led the first round with 47 percent of valid votes to Lula's 45 percent. First preliminary results are expected overnight into Monday. Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin ordered the extension until 7 p.m. local time due to reported public transport problems. Lula's coalition requested the move citing bus issues, while Bolsonaro's team cited flooding and power outages. A dispute in Salvador led to the arrest of a city official.
