Lula wins fourth term as Brazil's president

aftenposten.no (Swedish) —

Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, has been re-elected for a fourth term after defeating right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday's runoff. Bolsonaro refuses to concede defeat. With all votes counted, Lula secured 51.8 percent against Bolsonaro's 48.2 percent, according to electoral authorities. Bolsonaro, a senator and ally of US President Donald Trump, has vowed to demand the election result be annulled, citing a two-hour voting extension ordered by a Supreme Court judge. Lula's victory breaks a streak of right-wing electoral wins in Latin America since Trump took office in January 2025. The 45-year-old Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for an attempted coup.
