Flávio Bolsonaro Rejects Election Results, Seeks Annulment Over Voting Extension
Brazilian opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro refused to recognize President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory in Sunday's presidential runoff and announced he will seek to annul the election results. Bolsonaro called the decision by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend voting hours by two hours at Lula's campaign request illegal and unacceptable, claiming it changed the rules mid-game. He noted Zanin was Lula's former personal lawyer and said the justice overruled the Superior Electoral Tribunal. The extension followed Lula's campaign complaints that opposition mayors sabotaged public transport to block voters. Many polling stations had already closed and counted ballots, causing confusion, and Bolsonaro alleged his party's election monitors were removed during the extended period.
