Lula da Silva wins fourth term as Brazil's president

obozrevatel.com (Ukrainian) —

Brazil's incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, has won re-election to a fourth term, defeating opponent Flávio Bolsonaro in the October 25 runoff with 51.76% of the vote. Bolsonaro's defeat was unexpected as he led the first round with 47.03% versus Lula's 45.16%. This marks the first time since 1988 that a Brazilian candidate won a runoff after trailing in the first round. Lula previously served from 2003-2010 and again since 2023. His 2017 corruption conviction was annulled in 2021, allowing his 2022 victory over Flávio's father, Jair Bolsonaro.
