Lula wins unprecedented fourth term in Brazil, Bolsonaro challenges result
Brazilian left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was unexpectedly re-elected Sunday to an unprecedented fourth term, while conservative rival Flavio Bolsonaro announced plans to challenge the result. Lula won with 51.8% of the vote against 48.2% for Bolsonaro, a margin of 4.4 million votes, despite trailing after the first round. The president, who turns 81 on Tuesday, credited youth mobilization for the comeback victory. Bolsonaro, son of convicted former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, alleged electoral fraud and refused to recognize the result. Lula faces a limited mandate after conservative legislative gains, and has promised to regulate social media platforms accused of favoring his opponent.
