Bolsonaro rejects Lula's victory and demands election annulment
Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro refused to recognize Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's election victory and announced he will seek to annul the results, alleging electoral irregularities. Bolsonaro cited a Supreme Court judge's decision to extend voting hours by two hours due to transportation complaints, a request initially made by Lula's Workers' Party but later joined by Bolsonaro's own party. He called the outcome "incredible" and "a disgrace." The dispute is expected to intensify legal battles in Brazil's judiciary. It remains unclear whether Bolsonaro will pursue street protests like those following his father Jair Bolsonaro's 2022 defeat, which culminated in the January 2023 attacks on state institutions.
