Russian drones reach Lviv and Volyn by cutting warhead weight to add fuel

unian.net (Russian) —

Russian jet-powered drones are increasingly reaching Ukraine's western regions, including Lviv and Volyn, by reducing their combat payload to carry more fuel, according to Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat. Ukrainian air defense now shoots down up to 85% of these drones during some attacks. Ihnat explained that sacrificing parts of the payload, such as warheads, allows the drones to fly farther and conduct reconnaissance over western territories. The "Geran-5" drone now resembles a cruise missile in shape and capabilities, prompting Ukraine to classify it as a "rocket-drone." Fighter aircraft prove most effective against jet drones, while helicopters work well against conventional Shaheds. Ukraine is testing interceptor drones with Starlink connectivity, which are cheaper than Russian jet drones. Mobile fire groups, electronic warfare systems, and automated machine-gun turrets with AI also contribute to defense efforts.
