Macron promises transparency after French unrest turns violent
French President Emmanuel Macron vowed "full transparency" in a national address Sunday after weekend protests over the cost of living turned violent, with buildings set ablaze and stores looted. He said those responsible must pay and reimburse damages. Around 2,000 people were arrested during Saturday's unrest, which drew condemnation domestically and abroad. Macron blamed "far-left splinter groups" and delinquents for the violence, while Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu accused the France Unbowed movement of fomenting it. The unrest has political implications ahead of next year's presidential election, with far-right leader Marine Le Pen pitching herself as a candidate of order. U.S. President Donald Trump also blamed migration for the chaos, while leftist candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon denied responsibility.
