Macron keeps Nuñez but demands new riot-control strategy

swissinfo.ch (French) —

French President Emmanuel Macron has refused Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez's resignation and asked him to implement a new public order doctrine against rioters, aiming to stem the political crisis following Saturday's violent scenes in several cities. Nuñez submitted his resignation Sunday after the October 17 protests, but Macron kept him in office citing the need for continuous command of security forces. The president demanded new field tactics, transparency, and acknowledged failures in anticipation and intelligence that led to riots. The mobilization saw 2,331 police detentions, dozens of provisional jail placements, and nearly 1,000 injured officers. Two 17-year-old protesters were seriously wounded. Violence continued Sunday with 350 arrests, and around 30 shops were looted in Paris.
