Marseille bans public gatherings after riots

vg.no (Swedish) —

Marseille authorities have banned large public gatherings from 12:00 to 20:00 Monday following violent riots, looting, and fires that erupted after weekend demonstrations. Nearly 2,400 people were arrested nationwide during Saturday's riots, and about 1,000 police officers were injured. The unrest began a month ago as student protests against the education system. Demonstrators blocked the Louvre museum entrance in Paris Monday morning, saying they oppose police force and support the education protests. Museum management confirmed the action to AFP.
