Macron Vows to Prosecute Those Who Sought to Overthrow Republic
French President Emmanuel Macron said he will hold accountable those who sought to overthrow the republic, following protests across French cities that escalated into riots, including the burning of government buildings and the deaths of a police officer and a protester. In a televised address on Sunday evening, Macron stated the law would be applied firmly against those who damaged property or participated in the riots, adding, "We will hold accountable those who looted for damages, and we will hold accountable those who sought to overthrow the republic." He acknowledged the need for the government to listen to citizens' grievances and called for an emergency meeting with French mayors on Monday to discuss public security. Macron also requested the government hold meetings this week with stakeholders, including students, teachers, and union members, to discuss practical proposals. The protests, driven by rising prices and declining public services, have resulted in one protester death, hundreds of police injuries, and thousands of arrests, with riots featuring burned municipal buildings, looting, and violent clashes with police.
