Italy’s Meloni calls security meeting after Milan violence
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni convened a security meeting Monday to address ongoing violence in Milan, following clashes that began Saturday during a permitted protest against the high cost of living. Similar unrest has occurred in Bologna and Turin. Video footage shows masked youths throwing objects at police cars, with a supermarket on central Via Torino ransacked and scooters vandalized. Milan's mayor Giuseppe Sala expressed concern about a "new phenomenon" rooted in an international context. Meloni condemned the vandals as "thugs exploiting protests to sow chaos," stating on X that "demonstrating is a right, ravaging our cities is not." The incidents echo, to a lesser degree, recent violence in Paris.
