Mattarella Backs Police, Slams Violence at Provinces Assembly
Italian President Sergio Mattarella expressed full solidarity with law enforcement and condemned recent violence as unacceptable during the opening ceremony of the 39th national assembly of Italy's provinces in Imperia. He called for intelligent analysis and vigilant monitoring to counter violence from new actors. Mattarella addressed the uncertain status of provinces, stating the legislature left them in limbo and that the unfinished transition must end, as these institutions are constitutionally mandated. He emphasized their role in supporting small municipalities, internal and mountainous areas, and ensuring citizens' rights. The president also highlighted the need to continue modernizing schools beyond the PNRR plan and framed fighting depopulation and youth migration as a national mission. He noted the UPI was suppressed under fascism and reborn in 1946.
