France imposes curfews in cities after riots over school and living costs
France has imposed curfews in several cities following a weekend of violent riots that erupted from demonstrations, with the measure initially in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two days. The curfews aim to prevent further unrest and protect businesses and people from vandalism and looting. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu requested the curfews, which are partial and local, while warning that a state of emergency could be declared if needed. The riots began as protests over school conditions and living costs but escalated into street battles, with thousands of shops looted, vehicles burned, and public buildings damaged, costing hundreds of millions of euros. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñes offered his resignation, which President Emmanuel Macron rejected, citing inadequate preparations. Lecornu blamed the far-left for seeking political chaos ahead of next year's presidential election, a claim denied by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, while several countries, including Norway, advised citizens to avoid large crowds.
