French PM Lecornu announces local curfews after riots
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced local curfews in several cities following violent riots, asking prefects to issue geographically limited measures to protect shops from looting. The curfews will apply Monday and Tuesday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. in Lille, Douai, Wattignies, and Denain. Lecornu described the violence as specific looting-related crime and deemed curfews more appropriate than a state of emergency, though he did not rule it out. New protests are planned for Saturday via online calls. Over 2,300 people were detained nationwide, with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offering his resignation, which President Macron rejected. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt blamed left-wing extremists and migrants for the unrest.
