France admits failures as curfews imposed after riots
The French government announced Monday its first measures in response to weekend riots in several cities, including "partial" and "localized" curfews, as the crisis takes on an increasingly political turn. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the unrest is "very localized in urban centers" and ordered prefects to impose curfews, with initial restrictions set in parts of Paris, Lyon, and Lille. The government also reported 2,513 police custody cases and 67 incarcerations, while extending custody periods to 72 hours under organized crime qualifications. The government has ruled out a state of emergency but warned it could be implemented if necessary. At least 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted, prompting support funds and requests for online platforms to remove resale listings. Political opposition criticized the response as inadequate, while President Emmanuel Macron rejected the interior minister's resignation.
