Italy's Meloni wraps up public order summit after Milan youth violence
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni concluded a roughly 90-minute public order summit at Palazzo Chigi with ministers and security chiefs to address recent urban violence, particularly in Milan, and to evaluate new measures against those who exploit legitimate protests to sow chaos. The government is considering stricter norms for minors involved in riots. The meeting included Deputy Premiers Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, and police and intelligence leaders. Proposals under discussion include extending preventive detention to minors, creating a group damage offense, and introducing bail for protest organizers. Forza Italia suggested holding a Council of Ministers in Milan as a show of state presence. The summit follows a wave of violence by youths in Milan and comes amid political tensions. Opposition leader Matteo Renzi criticized Meloni and Piantedosi, calling for a new interior minister. A separate summit on the economic budget is expected later, and the government may approve an urgent decree on security at its next cabinet meeting on Friday.
