Macron: 'Nothing Justifies' Unbridled Violence in French Protests
French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that "nothing justifies" the "unbridled" violence seen in nationwide protests over the cost of living and other demands. He spoke in a televised address to the nation. Macron expressed "anger" and "shame" over vandalism and looting, distinguishing legitimate protesters from "those who destroyed, broke, and plundered." He promised "total transparency" on the security response and said looters will pay for damages, with at least 1,800 people arrested. The protests, which began over education and spread across Europe, included an attack on a 19th-century town hall in Limoges. Macron blamed "insurrectional elements of radical left groups" and criminals, and instructed regional prefects to protect public buildings, including banning protests when necessary.
