France imposes local curfews after riots damage 3,000 shops

dw.com (Russian) —

France will impose a locally limited curfew following mass riots, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced Monday after a crisis meeting, aiming to protect shops from ongoing looting. At least 3,000 stores have been damaged, according to Trade Minister Serge Papin, with losses estimated in the hundreds of millions of euros. Over 2,300 people were arrested, and nearly 1,000 police officers were injured during weekend violence. Lecornu blamed "ultra-left extremists and criminals" for the "organized chaos" ahead of presidential elections, while rejecting criticism of police conduct. A list of affected cities is expected later Monday.
