Protests in Milan, Bologna, and Turin turn violent over cost of living
Protests in Milan, Bologna, and Turin on October 17 turned violent, with police charges, stone-throwing, and detentions during "Italia in Piazza" demonstrations against the cost of living. Damage was reported to bus shelters, windows, and bookstores in the three cities. The nationwide student-led mobilization targeted rising prices, fuel and utility costs, low wages, and conditions in public schools and healthcare. In Milan, over 5,000 protesters clashed with police, who used charges after projectiles and firecrackers were thrown. In Bologna, seven people were detained following clashes near the station, where officers used water cannons and tear gas. In Turin, masked infiltrators caused chaos, and a group of youths ransacked a Feltrinelli bookstore. Demonstrators also chanted slogans against the government and in favor of family support over war spending. A photographer was slightly injured in Milan, and one officer was hurt.
