Belgian police fire tear gas at Brussels student protesters
Belgian police used tear gas and water cannon against protesters in Brussels on Saturday after student demonstrations against university fee hikes turned violent, with rioters clashing with authorities. Several hundred mostly young people gathered in central Brussels, many wearing masks and chanting anti-fascist slogans, while some overturned a car. Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin said "all necessary means will be used to restore order in the face of the rioters." The unrest echoes recent demonstrations in neighbouring France over education funding and living standards. A separate protest also occurred in Liège, where students cited rising education costs and difficulties accessing study materials.
