French protests over fuel prices and living costs turn violent
Tens of thousands of people protested across France on October 17 against rising fuel prices, the high cost of living, and deteriorating public services, leading to clashes between police and demonstrators in Paris and other cities. The Interior Ministry reported approximately 33,000 participants across 140 separate actions and at least 166 arrests. The protests brought together labor unions, students, and the "Yellow Vests" movement, following three weeks of ongoing student demonstrations. The ministry attributed the unrest to "far-left elements" and reported targeted violence by hooded individuals, including arson, attacks on police, and damage to public buildings in cities such as Lyon, Grenoble, and Marseille. Protesters in Paris chanted demands for President Emmanuel Macron's resignation before the demonstrations began. The Yellow Vests movement, which organized the event, previously led one of France's longest-running protest movements starting in 2018 over the rising cost of living.
