Protests across France ended with approximately 1,200 arrests and 150 police officers injured, according to Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who called it a miracle the toll was not worse. An estimated 550,000 people participated nationwide. The demonstrations, involving students, workers, and "yellow vest" activists, saw violence including the burning of public buildings. In Limoges, a fire destroyed part of the city hall, while in Lyon, the tourism office was set ablaze. Looting and clashes occurred in Paris, Toulouse, and other cities. Similar protests against the cost of living occurred in Portugal, Italy, Belgium, and Spain. The movement began in September over school conditions and expanded to broader social inequality and purchasing power concerns. Police conduct is under investigation following at least 24 complaints of violence.
